What Is Induction Hardening For Piston Rods And When Do You Need It?

Induction hardening (also called high-frequency hardening) is a surface heat treatment process that selectively hardens the surface of a piston rod while keeping the core tougher. The process uses high-frequency induction heating to quickly heat the surface layer, then quenches it to harden it.

Benefits of induction hardened piston rods:

- Higher surface hardness improves wear resistance
- The core remains softer and tougher, reducing the risk of brittle fracture
- Only the surface needs to be hardened, saving energy compared to through-hardening

When do you need induction hardened piston rods:

Not every application needs induction hardening — for many general-purpose applications, a quenched and tempered steel piston rod with chrome plating provides adequate service life at lower cost.
