It is wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant.
The hardness of iron is not high, and the surface wear resistance is increased by chrome plating to improve the surface hardness. For example, shock absorbers for cars and motorcycles, as well as engine cylinders, are all plated with hard chromium. At the same time, iron is prone to rusting when exposed to air, while chromium has strong antioxidant properties and can have a certain rust prevention effect after chrome plating.  
Chrome plated hollow steel bars have undergone chrome plating treatment, usually hard chrome plating, with much better surface hardness and wear resistance than ordinary steel bars; The polishing rod has only undergone polishing treatment, which may be the polishing of the original rod or the polishing after chrome plating. The former has low surface hardness, while the latter has high surface hardness, good wear resistance, and better smoothness than chrome plated rods.
That shaft is chrome plated, maybe it's also made of stainless steel. The board may also be chrome plated or stainless steel. Chromium plating can improve product performance, as it can enhance the hardness and wear resistance of the product surface. The surface of the hollow chrome plated rod is also chrome plated, and there is generally not much inventory of such products.
